YOUTH AQUATICS PHILOSOPHY
"The health and safety of our participants (including our instructors) is our top priority!" Our small class size ensures safety and very personal attention. Our instructors challenge the children in a way that they enjoy learning. The Newtown Athletic Club will always strive to be unmatched in the flexibility of scheduling and ease of registration. From the family locker room to the warm water pool, our facilities will evolve in order to continue leading the field of swim instruction.

Private (30-minute lesson with 1 swimmer)

ATTIRE / EQUIPMENT

Attire/Equipment
One piece bathing suit. Children who are not potty trained must wear a swim diaper in order to enter the pool. We suggest everyone shower before entering the pool. Flotation devices and goggles are welcome at the lifeguards' discretion.

Parent Responsibility
Parents must check their child in with their instructor and remain in the building for the length of the entire lesson. To ensure the child’s complete concentration during their lesson it is recommended that parents observe class from the observation area. Parents of children who are new to the program will be permitted on the deck until the child feels comfortable.

MANDATORY RULES FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN:

1. All children under the age of 5 MUST be accompanied by an adult into the water and remain there at all times.

2. All children under the age of 10 MUST be accompanied to the pool by an adult. Parents may sit on the pool deck or in the observation area and remain in view of the child at all times. Any child not accompanied by an adult will sit on the pool deck until the parent can be located.

3. All children between the ages of 11 and 13 are permitted to be in the pool area without a parent. Before the child enters the pool the parent must complete the "check in" book located near the lifeguard stand. Please be advised if there are any problems with an unaccompanied child the parent will be required to come and get them and sign them out. A child will not be released unless the parent is present.

These rules are designed for the safety of your children. There are NO exceptions.

NAC Pool Rules:

  1. The Lifeguard is here to maintain a safe environment for
    you and your family; Lifeguards are in charge at all times.
  2. No Diving.
  3. No Running.
  4. All non potty-trained children must wear swim diapers.
  5. No glass containers of any kind in the pool area.
  6. No street shoes on deck.
  7. No perfumes, colognes or scented lotions.
  8. All swimmers must shower before using the pools to help
    keep the water clean for each other.
  9. No climbing on the railings.
  10. Children ages 10 and under must be accompanied
    by an adult.
  11. Children ages 11-13 must pass a swim test to swim
    unsupervised.
  12. Any child under age 5 must be within an arm's reach
    of the supervising adult in the water at all times.
  13. Only children under age 5 are permitted in the therapy
    (small) pool and must be accompanied by an adult.
  14. Children ages 5 - 16 are only permitted in the large pool.

Lesson Locations
Aqua-Tots, Water Wigglers, Levels B and 1 are held in the small pool (unless otherwise noted on the schedule) which is approximately 93 degrees. This pool has a 1 1/2 foot deep seat across one side on which students can stand. Levels 2 and up are taught in the lap pool. The lap pool ranges from 3-1/2 to 5 feet deep and is 25 meters long.

Level B (Beginning at three years of age and fully potty trained)
Pre-requisites: Children must be willing to enter the pool without parent.  Floatation devices are used to help develop the students comfort in the water.
Goal Skills: Children will be introduced to pool safety, floating with assistance, blowing bubbles, wetting face and assisted kicking front and back.  Children must be able to float unassisted and make forward progress in the water without assistance to pass level B.

Level 1
Pre-requisites: Children are swimming the basics of the front and backstroke, as well as floating unassisted in a horizontal position prior to entering the class.
Goal Skills: Development of freestyle and backstroke are key elements of this class.  Additional goals are comfort swimming with face in the water.  To pass level one a student must be able to swim freestyle for one length of the therapy pool (12 yards) and backstroke for one length (12 yards).

Level 2
Pre-requisites:  Both front and backstroke are performed well prior to entering this class. Children must be able to swim half a length of freestyle and backstroke in the main pool (12 yards)
Goal Skills: Rhythmic breathing to the left and right is the primary new skill taught in level two.  In addition refinement of backstroke and endurance of freestyle and backstroke are covered in this course.  To pass level two a student must be able to swim a full length of the main pool (25 meters) of freestyle with rhythmic breathing and 25 meters of backstroke.

Level 3
Pre-requisites:  Children need to swim freestyle and backstroke for one length of the main pool (25 meters) to enter this class. In addition rhythmic breathing to the side when swimming freestyle is a requirement to join level three.
Goal Skills: The primary new skill in level three is breaststroke.  In addition continued refinement of freestyle and backstroke are goals of this course.  To pass level three a student must be able to swim 50 meters of freestyle and 25 meters of backstroke, in addition students must be able to swim 12 meters of breaststroke.

Level 4
Pre-requisites: Children must be able to swim a full lap (50 meters) of freestyle, one length of backstroke (25 meters), as well as half a length of breaststroke (12 meters).
Goal skills: Refinement and development of breast stroke are the key elements of level four.  Upon completion students should be able to properly swim 25 meters of breast stroke.  In addition students continue to work on technique, including flip turns for freestyle, and endurance of freestyle and backstroke.  Along with breast stroke skills a student must also be able to swim 75 meters of freestyle and 50 meters of backstroke to pass level four.

Level 5
Pre-requisites: Children must be able to swim 75 meters of freestyle, 50 meters of backstroke and 25 meters of breaststroke to enter level five. 
Goal skills:  Further refinement of all strokes and endurance are the goals of level 5.  Students will learn to swim longer intervals with greater technique in level five. To pass level five a student should be able to swim 100 meters of freestyle, 100 meters of backstroke, and 50 meters of breaststroke.


MAKE-UP AND CREDIT POLICY
There are no make-ups, refunds or credits for missed classes without a doctor's note. If a class is cancelled due to weather, emergencies, or unforseen circumstances, Newtown Athletic Club will notify you of the rescheduled date and time.

Newtown Athletic Club reserves the right to cancel or change program schedules due to low enrollment. Participants who cancel one week prior to the start of a fee-based session may submit a credit request. Refunds will not be given for programs cancelled by participants. Participants who have a doctor’s note verifying missed days due to an injury or illness may submit a credit/refund request. All credit/refund requests are subject to a $20 processing fee.
